Prerequisites: Math 122. Not open to students with credit in Math 124. 
Enrollment: 151 Strong Hall (all changes: drops, adds).
Withdrawals: Jan 23  - Feb 26      The course is deleted from the student's record.
Feb 27 - April 8     A grade of W goes on the student's record.
April 9 - May 13    Requires Instructor's approval and signature.

 

Course Material

The material to be covered in this course is mostly contained in chapters 2 through 8 of Section One (Vector Calculus, by Barr) and chapter 1 of Section Two ( Elementary Linear Algebra, by Spence et al) of the text. The material includes Geometry and Linear Algebra in n-dimensional Euclidean space . Matrices and Linear Transformations. Differentiation and its Applications. Integration--line integrals, triple integrals, surface integrals, and changes of variable in double and triple integrals. Fundamental theorems of integration--Green's Theorem, the divergence theorem and Stoke's Theorem.

Classes

This course is being taught in the Lecture/Discussion Session mode. The Monday, Wednesday and Friday class Lecture Sessions will be devoted to present new material, while the Tuesday and Thursday Discussion Sessions will mostly be used for problem solving.
The students have to attend the Discussion Session in which they are enrolled.

The students are expected to bring the textbook and the calculator to every class. They should read the book and attempt to solve some of the problems in preparation for each class.

Homework

Homework problems will be assigned almost every class and they will be collected once or twice a week, usually during the Discussion Sessions. Homework is a major part of the learning process in Mathematics. It is essential that the students work on the problems on a regular basis. The students are encouraged to work and discuss the problems in groups, but they should turn in individual solutions. The problems will be usually listed at www.math.ukans.edu/~torres/123/hw.shtml but the students should contact the instructor for the latest update of the assignments.
No late homework assignments will be accepted.

Exams
The course has uniform Midterm and Final Exams on the dates listed below. There are also two In-class Exams. The specific material to be covered in the midterm and in-class exams will be properly announced in advance. The final exam is comprehensive.
 
MIDTERM EXAM: Tuesday, March 16, 5:45-7:45 p.m.
FINAL EXAM: Monday, May 17, 4:30-7:00 p.m.

The exams have been scheduled so that there should not be any conflict with any other class. The official timetable of the university specifies which class has priority in case of conflict. In particular, courses with uniform common exams take priority to those without common exams. Please refer to http://www.ukans.edu/~registr/pdf/032finals_regs.pdf for further information.

Grading

Your grade in the course will be determined by the number of points that you accumulate. The points are distributed in the following way:
 
Homework, Quizzes and/or Projects  200 points
In-class Exams 1 and 2  300 points
Midterm Exam 200 points
Final Exam 300 points
 
Total 1,000 points

A total of at least 900 points (90%) will guarantee an A, 800 (80%) a B, 700 (70%) a C, and 600 (60%) a D.
