Classes

You are expected to bring your textbook and the calculator to every class. You should read the book and attempt to solve some of the problems in preparation for each class.

Homework

Homework problems will be assigned every week and they will be collected on Wednesday. Homework is a major part of the learning process in Mathematics. It is essential that students work on the problems on a regular basis. Students are encouraged to work and discuss the problems in groups, but they should turn in individual solutions. The problems will be usually listed at www.math.ku.edu/~torres/290/hw.shtml but the students should contact the instructor for the latest update of the assignments.
No late homework assignments will be accepted.

Exams

The course has three in-class exams and a final exam. The specific material to be covered in the in-class exams will be properly announced in advance. The final exam is comprehensive.

Exam 1: Wednesday, Feb. 15, in-class.
Exam 2: Wednesday, March 14, in-class.
Exam 3: Wednesday, April 18, in-class.
FINAL EXAM: Wednesday, May 9, 10:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Grading

Your grade in the course will be determined by the number of points that you accumulate. The points are distributed in the following way:
Homework 200 points
In-class Exams 1, 2, 3 300 points
Final Exam 200 points

Total 700 points

A total of 90% of the points will guarantee an A-, 80% a B-, 70% a C-, and 60% a D-.

Topics

The course will cover topics system of linear equations, matrices, determinants, vector spaces, linear transformations and eigenvalues and eigenvectors, from Chapters 1 to 7 of the text. If time permits additional topics will be covered too. The students should consult the Tentative Timetable - www.math.ku.edu/~torres/290/timetable.shtml for more details.
